Dahlias for Different
Lifestyles
Class 1 Sea
Farer
A
Creative Line Design
that exhibits a seaside theme. In this design style, line direction is dominant and a minimum of plant material and other optional
components are used. Line may be vertical, horizontal, diagonal or circular. Man-made
found objects may be used to provide line.
Class 2
Mountaineer
Parallel Design. A design in which
three or more groupings are placed in a strong parallel manner. The parallel direction may
be vertical, horizontal, or diagonal at your discretion. However, the design may not
exceed 16 inches in width. The design should be in one container, or containers combined
so as to appear as one unit. A connective may be used at the base of a grouping to unify
the design. All dahlias must be white
Class 3
Woodsman
A Pot-et-Fleur, no larger than 14 inches wide x 14
inches deep that evokes a woodland feeling. The
pot-et-fleur must combine two or more rooted plants, growing in soil or other medium, with
at least three dahlias integrated into the design, artistically arranged in a suitable
container. Plants may be of the same or different varieties, but all must have compatible
growing requirements. Dry materials are permitted.
Class 4 Farmer
A Floral Arrangement in a basket that incorporates
at least two different vegetables.
Class 5
Country Gentleman
A Bouquet using three or more colors of dahlias conveying the feeling of an
English countryside.
Class 6 City Dweller
A Contemporary, Creative Design using
bold colors, plant material, and other components in an abstract manner. (Hint: use
minimal floral material.)
Class 7
Society Dame
Designers
Choice.
Design not to exceed 12 inches wide x 12 inches deep. Height is at designers
discretion but should be in proportion to the rest of the design.
Class 8 Child
At Play
Novice Class. Designers
Choice. Limited to those who have not won a blue ribbon in the Floral Arts Section.
Artistic Arrangement Rules
1. All entries are to be staged by 11:00AM sharp. Entries must not be arranged in the Floral Arts room.
2. Dahlias must predominate in each arrangement.
3. Only natural materials are permitted. (No artificial or dyed material.) This includes dried material.
4. Unless otherwise specified, any type of dahlias, mixed types and colors are allowed.
5. Exhibitors are allowed only one entry per category and each entry must be the work of only one exhibitor. The exhibitor need not have grown plant material.
6. Accessories may be used in all arrangements.
7. Bases are encouraged. Label the bottom of the container. Entries are to be removed by the exhibitor at 4:00PM on Sunday.
The Rhode Island Dahlia Society is affiliated with the Rhode Island Federation of Garden Clubs, Inc., which provides the judges for this section.
